We Need Our Sleep

We need our sleep!The “Sleep in America” Poll (2002) stated that 58% of U.S. adults experience symptoms of insomnia a few nights a week.  Sleep is what rejuvenates and regenerates us. Deep sleep is the main state that allows our body to keep us looking younger. With a good deal of sleep immune system stays intact and our youthful glowing appearance remains. Insomnia is something that can limit our abilities to proceed with every day tasks.

   

Possible factors that contribute to insomnia are:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Hormonal changes
  • Decreased melanin
  • Pain
  • Medications
  • Genetics
  • Foods
  • Sleep apnea
  • Disturbing noisy environments
  • Medical conditions such as; Allergies, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease

Natural remedies that can aid in our sleeping include food,

holistic practices, our environment and essential oils.

 

Tryptophan – rich healthy foods that aid in sleep

  • Miso
  • Beans
  • Whole grains
  • Lentils
  • Chickpeas
  • Hazelnuts
  • Peanuts
  • Eggs
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Sesame Seeds

Snacks that are good for nighttime are:

  •  Glass of warm milk
  • Half of a turkey or peanut butter sand which
  • Whole grain cereal or granola with yogurt
  • Banana and cup of hot chamomile tea
  • Small serving of fresh or dried fruit
  • Small handful of raw nuts or seeds

Practices that aid in sleep:

  • Exercise
  • Yoga
  • Acupuncture
  • Energy Work (Reiki, Healing Touch, etc)

Application of Essential Oils:

  • Lavender Bath
  • Vetiver on feet (& socks!)
  • Sandalwood- dab on forehead
  • Roman Chamomile- on wrist, feet, inhale
  • Valor-put on feet
